On June 2, CTNBio (National Technical Biosafety Commission) of Brazil unanimously approved the commercial use of genetically modified maize for insect resistance, called event EH913. The new technology, derived from a specific gene of the bacterium Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt), is highly effective against lepidopteran pests, especially Spodoptera frugiperda (also known as Fall Armyworm). The EH913 event is the result of Brazilian public-private partnership between Embrapa (Brazil’s public agricultural research institute) and Helix, a company of the Agroceres group.
